How to Move a Massage Chair: Across the Room or Across the Country

A massage chair weighs as much as a large appliance, carries its weight high and awkwardly, and is easy to damage during a move. Most damage happens to the backrest and the recline actuator, not to the frame.

Repositioning within a room

Return the chair to its fully upright home position first and unplug it. Moving a reclined chair puts side load on the recline mechanism.

Most chairs have transport wheels at the front of the base: tilt the chair backward onto them by lifting from the front of the seat frame, never by the armrests, headrest or footrest.

Two people is the correct answer even for a short reposition. Use furniture sliders on hard floors and never drag the chair across carpet, which loads the base joints.

Preparing for a house move

Keep the original box and foam if you can — it is the single biggest factor in whether a chair survives a long-distance move intact.

Many chairs separate into a base and a backrest with a few bolts and one or two connectors. Photograph every connector before disconnecting, bag the hardware and tape it to the frame.

Wrap the backrest and foot section separately in moving blankets, secure loose parts and the remote, and never stack anything on the seat or backrest during transit.

Stairs, doorways and movers

Measure doorways, hallway turns and stair widths before moving day, using the disassembled dimensions if you plan to separate the chair.

Tell your movers the chair's published weight in advance — among the chairs we publish, listed chair weights run from about 174 to 344 lb before packaging. Some standard moving quotes exclude items of this weight or class, and stair carries are typically charged separately.

For long-distance moves, confirm whether the chair is covered by the mover's valuation. Freight damage to an out-of-warranty chair is rarely recoverable from the manufacturer.

After the move

Reconnect every harness fully before powering on — a partially seated connector is the most common cause of a chair that seems dead after relocation.

Let the chair sit at room temperature for a few hours if it travelled in cold or heat before running a program, then run one full cycle and listen for anything new.

Recheck wall clearance in the new room against the chair's reclined footprint before daily use.

Measure the chair in the orientation its manufacturer permits for transport (check the manual; do not assume it can be tipped or turned), then compare against each doorway's clear width and height. Turns, stair landings and room for hands on both sides can be tighter than a straight doorway.
