Methodology

How We Evaluate Massage Chairs

Our goal is to be explicit about what we know, how we know it, and where our information ends.

Two kinds of review

Every assessment on ChairMentor carries one of two labels, and the label is set by the product record itself rather than by the writer.

  • Tested by ChairMentor — the chair has a verified testing record with a date and a named tester. The interface cannot display this label without that record.
  • Research Review — our assessment is based on manufacturer specifications, published documentation, retailer listings and verified owner feedback. Every chair currently in our database is a Research Review.

Scoring categories

When we score a chair, we assess these seven categories. A chair is only given an overall score once we have enough sourced information to justify each one; until then the review shows "Rating pending assessment" rather than a placeholder number.

  1. Category 1

    Massage performance

Roller technology, track shape and length, airbag coverage, and the range of intensity the chair can produce.

  2. Category 2

    Body fit

Stated user height and weight accommodation, seat width, foot well adjustment and shoulder placement.

  3. Category 3

    Features

Heat, stretch, zero gravity stages, body scanning, controls and connectivity.

  4. Category 4

    Ease of use

Remote and app design, program selection, and how quickly settings can be adjusted.

  5. Category 5

    Build quality

Materials, chair weight, published construction details and documented reliability signals.

  6. Category 6

    Warranty

Coverage length by tier, service model, and how terms vary between retailers.

  7. Category 7

    Value

What the chair delivers relative to its typical street price and to direct alternatives.

Sourcing standards

Specifications live in a single product database, and each important field can carry a source and a verification date. We do not publish measurements we have not taken, we do not attribute quotes to people, and we do not claim certifications, awards or manufacturing origins that we cannot verify.

What we will not do

  • Invent testing results, owner experiences or expert credentials.
  • Present a manufacturer claim as an independent finding.
  • Make medical claims. Massage chairs are comfort products.
  • Let a commercial relationship determine a ranking.
