Airbags in Massage Chairs: Counts, Placement and Intensity
Airbag count is the specification most likely to be inflated, because there is no standard for what counts as one air cell. Placement and pressure control tell you far more than a number.

Why the count is unreliable
One manufacturer counts each individual bladder, another counts each inflation zone, and a third counts paired bladders once. A chair advertising 100 airbags is not necessarily doing more than a chair advertising 40.
Verified airbag counts appear on our reviews where the manufacturer publishes them, but we treat the figure as descriptive rather than comparative.
Placement is what you feel
The zones that change the experience are the shoulders, the arms and hands, the hips and seat, and the calves and feet. Shoulder airbags in particular are what hold you in place during a stretch program.
Hip and seat airbags create the twisting motion in stretch routines. Without them, a stretch program is mostly recline.
Pressure and intensity control
Airbag intensity is usually set in three to five steps, and on better chairs zones can be reduced or switched off independently. That matters if arm compression is uncomfortable but calf compression is not.
Compression is a different sensation to roller pressure: broad and squeezing rather than pointed. People who dislike deep rollers often prefer airbag-led programs.
Noise and maintenance
Air pumps are the main noise source in most chairs. If quiet operation matters, ask about pump noise specifically rather than overall decibel claims.
Air cells and hoses are among the more common long-term failure points, and they are usually covered under the parts portion of a warranty rather than the structural portion.
